Gophers are small animals that live underground. They have big front teeth and strong paws to help them dig. Gophers make tunnels and push dirt to the surface, creating small, crescent-shaped mounds. They are brown or black in color and range from 4 to 18 inches long.

Gophers eat plants, roots, vegetables, and seeds. They do not drink water but get moisture from the plants they eat. Gophers use the pockets in their cheeks to carry food to their tunnels. They are active both day and night and dig more when the soil is soft in spring and fall.

Gopher tunnels are usually 18 inches below ground, but their nests can be much deeper. Gophers do not often leave their tunnels, but sometimes they come out to eat plants near tunnel openings. If you notice plant damage or small mounds of dirt in clusters, gophers may be living nearby.
